Abstract Jauhar
An abstract visualisation of women committing jauhar
interesting abstract miniature painting is the artists’ depiction of the practice of ‘Jauhar’, derived from the Sanskrit word ‘ Jauhara’ meaning ‘ to protect oneself’ - an ancient tradition of self immolation to evade capture and dishonour by enemy forces. Women of the besieged fort would descend the steps and walk into the flames of the ‘Jauhar kund’ (sacred fire pit) one by one, embracing death as a solemn duty and ultimate sacrifice.
The artist beautifully and successfully captures the essence of the ceremony with the womens’ slight smile and half closed eyes. The use of the colour yellow gives them an ethereal quality and the in-distinction between them creates a sense of unity and common resolve.
