Polka Pichwai SNJ
Miniature style Pichwai painting, Lord Krishna surrounded by devotees performing aarti.
This Shrinathji pichwai depicts a scene of ‘pushtimarg’ or path of devotion, where each devotee is in service of the Lord Krishna with individual duties of performing Aarti, fanning the lord and using the ‘morchadi’ or peacock feathers known to be Lord Krishna’s favourite.
Bal Gopal or the toddler age of Lord Krishna’s life is often depicted in Shrinathji pichwai paintings as it is a beloved form of Krishna. Devotees are drawn to the innocence and playfulness of Bal Gopal.
The artist has made interesting use of black fabric for the backdrop with a play of patterns, two variety of bootis’ (small pattern) and a defining border creating a separation between the devotee and divine , the polka dots on the top probably signifying cosmic planets or heavenly bodies.
